Hi, my name is Colette, Miss Colette to my students. I was born and raised in Waco, TX and received my AA in Interpreting for the Deaf Program at McLennan College in 1985. In 1989, I moved to Anchorage, Alaska; Alaska or Bust style, just like Hippies. We even had a sign on our truck filled with all our earthly possessions. I immediately found work at the Anchorage School District as an Interpreter for the Deaf from 1989-1999. In 1999, I became involved with missionary work in Haiti and worked as the director at an orphanage, while also teaching EFL until 2001. It was in Haiti where I met and adopted my daughter.
I returned to ASD in 2001, this time as a Bilingual Tutor. I retired from the school district in 2019, leaving me with 40 years of experience in the field of public education. After I retired from Anchorage School District, I worked as a Family Advocate at Head Start for low-income families.
I love to camp and do things with my hands like beading, knitting and crocheting, and gardening.
I have a passion for education and children. I love the diversity of Anchorage and tend to infuse cultural appreciation in my tutoring sessions.
